Bagler

1196–1217 · 12th century · Also known as Baglers

The Bagler were a faction in the Norwegian civil wars, formed in 1196 by opponents of King Sverre with the backing of the church, led by Bishop Nicholas Arnesson of Oslo. Strongest in the east around the Oslofjord, they set up rival kings and fought the Birkebeiner for two decades. A settlement in 1208 and the accession of Haakon IV in 1217 brought the factions together.
