Sybaris
Sybaris was a Greek city on the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy, founded by Achaean colonists around 720 BCE and so wealthy that its name became a byword for luxury. It was destroyed by its rival Croton in 510 BCE. Descendants of its citizens took part in the Panhellenic foundation of Thurii nearby in 444/443 BCE but were soon expelled after quarrels with the other settlers.
