Tadhg O'Carroll, Baron of Ely

16th century · 16th century

Tadhg O'Carroll was chief of the O'Carrolls of Éile in the Irish midlands in the mid-16th century. Under the Tudor policy of surrender and regrant he gave up his lands to the crown in 1552 and received them back with the title Baron of Ely. His submission was part of the crown's effort to bring Gaelic lords under English law, and the territory was later divided between King's County and Tipperary.
