Taj Chan Ahk

741–c. 795 · 8th century

Taj Chan Ahk (741–c. 795) was the most powerful king of the Maya city of Cancuén in Guatemala, reigning from 757. He built a great palace and controlled trade in jade, obsidian and pyrite along the Pasión river route between the highlands and the lowland cities. Cancuén was abandoned soon after his reign, when its royal court was massacred around 800.
