Taj Bawdi

c. 1620 · 17th century

The Taj Bawdi is a large stepwell in Bijapur, built around 1620 by Malik Sandal in honour of Taj Sultana, queen of Ibrahim Adil Shah II. Entered through a great arched gateway flanked by octagonal towers, its deep tank stored water for the city's population. It formed part of the elaborate system of tanks, wells and channels that supplied the Adil Shahi capital.
