Tambov Rebellion

1920–1921 · 20th century · Part of the Russian Civil War

The Tambov Rebellion was a peasant uprising against Bolshevik rule in Tambov province, south-east of Moscow, in 1920–1921. Led by Alexander Antonov and provoked by forced grain requisitioning, it grew to tens of thousands of fighters. The Red Army under Mikhail Tukhachevsky suppressed it with mass hostage-taking, deportations and the use of poison gas.
