Tampere
Tampere is a city in southern Finland on the Tammerkoski rapids between two large lakes. Founded in 1779, it used the water power of the rapids to become the country's leading industrial town, with textile mills such as Finlayson, and was a centre of the labour movement. In 1918 it was the main Red stronghold of the Finnish Civil War until its capture by the Whites. It is now one of Finland's largest cities.
