Finnish Civil War
The Finnish Civil War was fought from January to May 1918, shortly after Finland's independence, between the socialist Reds, strongest in the industrial south, and the government's Whites under Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim. With the help of German troops, the Whites won. About 36,000 people died, many in executions and in prison camps after the fighting, leaving deep divisions in Finnish society.
