Tavira

Tavira is a town on the Gilão river near the Ria Formosa lagoon in the eastern Algarve, southern Portugal. Under Muslim rule it was a fortified port and briefly an independent taifa in the 1140s, and in 1242 the Order of Santiago under Paio Peres Correia took it for Portugal. It prospered from fishing and from trade with North Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries.
