Order of Santiago

1170 · 12th century · Also known as Order of Saint James of the Sword

The Order of Santiago was a military order founded around 1170 at Cáceres in the Kingdom of León and approved by the pope in 1175. Named after St James, patron of Spain, it soon made Uclés in Castile its main seat and became the largest and richest of the Spanish military orders, with wide estates in La Mancha and Extremadura. Its mastership was annexed to the crown under the Catholic Monarchs.
