Tecumseh

c. 1768–1813 · 18th century

Tecumseh was a Shawnee leader who built a confederacy of Native American peoples to resist the expansion of the United States into the Old Northwest. With his brother Tenskwatawa he founded Prophetstown in 1808 and rejected land cessions such as the Treaty of Fort Wayne. He allied with Britain in the War of 1812, helped take Detroit and was killed at the Battle of the Thames in 1813.
