Tegernsee Abbey

8th century–1803 · 8th century

Tegernsee Abbey was a Benedictine monastery on the Tegernsee lake in Upper Bavaria, founded in the mid-eighth century by members of a leading Bavarian noble family. It became one of the richest and most learned abbeys of Bavaria, with a celebrated scriptorium, and the early Latin romance Ruodlieb was probably written there in the eleventh century. It was secularised in 1803.
