The Blitz

1940–1941 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Blitz was the German bombing campaign against British cities from September 1940 to May 1941. London was bombed on 57 consecutive nights at its start, and ports and industrial centres such as Coventry, Liverpool and Plymouth were heavily hit; more than 40,000 civilians were killed, but the campaign failed to break British morale or war production.
