The Last Supper (Leonardo)

c. 1495–1498 · 15th century

The Last Supper is a mural painted by Leonardo da Vinci between about 1495 and 1498 in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, commissioned by Ludovico Sforza. It shows the moment Christ announces that one of the apostles will betray him. Because Leonardo used an experimental technique on dry plaster, the paint began to flake within decades, and the work has been restored many times.
