Theodemir (Visigoth)

d. c. 743 · 8th century

Theodemir was a Visigothic noble who governed south-eastern Spain at the time of the Muslim conquest. After resisting the invaders he agreed the Treaty of Orihuela with Abd al-Aziz ibn Musa in 713, keeping control of seven towns in return for tribute. His land became known to the Arabs as Tudmir, after his name, and survived as an autonomous Christian district for several decades.
