Thierry of Alsace

c. 1099–1168 · 12th century · Also known as Dietrich of Alsace

Thierry of Alsace was count of Flanders from 1128 to 1168. A grandson of Count Robert I through his mother, he was backed by the Flemish towns against William Clito after the murder of Charles the Good and became count when Clito died in 1128. He went on several crusades, by tradition bringing the relic of the Holy Blood to Bruges, and his long reign was a time of peace and prosperity.
