Bruges
Bruges is a city in West Flanders, Belgium, linked to the North Sea by canals. From the 12th to the 15th century it was the commercial capital of north-western Europe, home of a Hanseatic office and Italian banking houses, a leading centre of the Flemish cloth trade and of painters such as Jan van Eyck. The silting of its waterway shifted trade to Antwerp, leaving a remarkably preserved medieval centre.
