Thomas Upington
Sir Thomas Upington was an Irish-born lawyer and politician who was Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1884 to 1886. He later served as attorney general and as a judge of the Cape Supreme Court. The Boer settlers at Grootfontein named their short-lived Republic of Upingtonia after him in 1885, hoping for his support.
