Dorsland Trek

1874–1881 · 19th century · Also known as Thirstland Trek

The Dorsland Trek ('Thirstland Trek') was a series of migrations by Boer families from the Transvaal across the Kalahari region between 1874 and 1881, seeking land and freedom from British influence. Many people and cattle died of thirst and disease on the way through present-day Botswana and Namibia. The survivors settled at Humpata in southern Angola, and some later founded the short-lived Republic of Upingtonia near Grootfontein in 1885.
