Transvaal

The Transvaal is the region of north-eastern South Africa lying between the Vaal and Limpopo rivers. Settled by Voortrekkers from the 1830s, it formed the South African Republic, was annexed by Britain as the Transvaal Colony after the Second Boer War, and became the Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa in 1910. In 1994 it was divided into Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and part of North West.
