Transpadane Republic

1796–1797 · 18th century

The Transpadane Republic was a sister republic of revolutionary France set up in Lombardy, north of the Po, after Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the Austrian Duchy of Milan in 1796. With Milan as its capital, its new institutions replaced the old Austrian administration. In 1797 it became the core of the Cisalpine Republic.
