Voortrekkers

1830s–1840s · 19th century

The Voortrekkers were Dutch-speaking settlers, mainly from the eastern Cape Colony, who left British rule from 1835 onwards in the Great Trek and moved into the interior of southern Africa. They fought the Ndebele and the Zulu, notably at Blood River in 1838, and founded the Natalia Republic and the states that became the South African Republic and the Orange Free State.
