Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg is the westernmost state of Austria, lying between Lake Constance, the Rhine and the Arlberg pass, with its capital at Bregenz. It was formed from lordships of the counts of Montfort, Werdenberg and Hohenems acquired by the Habsburgs between 1363 and 1765, and was long governed from Tyrol. In 1919 a large majority voted to join Switzerland, but the plan was not carried out.
