Lake Constance
Lake Constance is a large lake on the Rhine at the northern foot of the Alps, bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Its shores were settled by the Alemanni and later filled with monasteries such as Reichenau and Saint Gall, the bishopric of Constance and free imperial cities including Lindau and Überlingen. Trade across and around the lake linked Swabia with Italy.
