Saint Gall

c. 550–c. 646 · 7th century · Also known as Gallus

Saint Gall was a missionary monk, traditionally said to be an Irish companion of Saint Columbanus, who around 612 settled as a hermit in the Steinach valley south of Lake Constance. The Abbey of Saint Gall was founded on the site of his cell by Otmar in 719 and became one of the leading monasteries of Europe. The Swiss city and canton of St. Gallen are named after him.
