Duchy of Alamannia

536 CE – 746 CE (approx.)

The Frankish duchy that ruled the Alemanni of south-west Germany and Switzerland for two centuries, until the Carolingians abolished it at Cannstatt.

Origins

After Clovis' victories over the Alemanni around 496 and 506, the southern Alemanni stayed under Ostrogothic protection until 536, when the Ostrogoth king Witigis ceded them to the Franks. The Merovingian kings then placed the Alemanni under dukes, a region covering modern Baden-Württemberg, Alsace, eastern Switzerland and Bavarian Swabia.

Rule and society

The dukes governed under Frankish overlordship but often acted independently, especially as Merovingian power weakened. Law was codified in the Pactus and the Lex Alamannorum of the early 8th century. Christianity spread through bishoprics at Constance and Basel and monasteries such as St Gall, founded on the hermitage of Gallus, and Reichenau, founded in 724.

Decline and legacy

Duke Lantfrid and his successor Theudebald resisted the rising Carolingian mayors of the palace. In 746 Carloman summoned the Alemannic nobility to Cannstatt and executed many of them, ending the ducal office. Alamannia was then ruled by Frankish counts until the Duchy of Swabia emerged in the early 10th century.
