Natalia Republic

1839 CE – 1843 CE · capital Pietermaritzburg

The Voortrekker republic in Natal, created after the victory at Blood River and annexed by Britain within five years.

Origins

Voortrekkers crossed the Drakensberg into Natal in 1837. After Dingane's men killed Piet Retief's party in 1838, Andries Pretorius led the commando that defeated the Zulu at Blood River in December 1838. The trekkers founded Pietermaritzburg and organised a republic with a Volksraad in 1839.

Rule and society

The Volksraad held supreme power in a weak, quarrelsome government. In 1840 the Boers helped Mpande overthrow Dingane and seized thousands of cattle from the Zulu Kingdom. Farms were laid out across the uplands, and the Volksraad's plan to move Africans southwards alarmed the Cape government.

Decline and legacy

British troops occupied Port Natal in 1842; the Boers won at Congella and besieged them, until Dick King's ride to Grahamstown brought relief. Natalia submitted, Britain annexed it in 1843 as the Natal Colony, and many trekkers moved back over the Drakensberg.
