Transvaal Province

1910–1994 · 20th century

The Transvaal Province was one of the four provinces of the Union of South Africa and later the Republic, formed in 1910 from the Transvaal Colony, the former South African Republic. It contained Pretoria, the administrative capital, and the gold-mining city of Johannesburg on the Witwatersrand. In 1994 it was divided into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Northern Province, now Limpopo, and part of North West.
