Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the largest city of South Africa and the capital of Gauteng province. It was founded in 1886 after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand and grew within a decade into a mining city of over 100,000 people, many of them foreign uitlanders, whose grievances fed the conflict that led to the Second Boer War. It remains the country's financial and industrial centre.
