Johannes Vermeer

1632–1675 · 17th century

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who worked in Delft. He painted slowly, and only about 35 works are attributed to him, mostly quiet domestic interiors lit by daylight, such as The Milkmaid and Girl with a Pearl Earring, as well as the townscape View of Delft. Little known after his death, he was rediscovered in the 19th century and is now among the most admired Dutch artists.
