Thoros of Edessa

d. 1098 · 11th century

Thoros was the Armenian ruler of Edessa in the late 11th century, a former Byzantine official who held the city after Byzantine power in the region collapsed. In 1098 he invited Baldwin of Boulogne to help defend it and adopted him as son and heir. Weeks later Thoros was killed in a riot, and Baldwin founded the County of Edessa, the first crusader state.
