Timar
The timar was a grant of revenue from land in the Ottoman Empire given to a cavalryman, or sipahi, in return for military service. The timar holder collected taxes from the peasants of his assigned territory and served in campaigns with his retainers. Accounts of the Ottoman Empire treat the timar system as a foundation of Ottoman rural society and military organisation in the empire's classical period.
