Toera

d. 1897 · 19th century

Toera was the last king of the Sakalava kingdom of Menabe in western Madagascar. After France conquered Madagascar in 1895 he refused to submit to French rule, and he was killed in 1897 when French troops attacked his capital at Ambiky. His death ended Menabe's independence, although Sakalava resistance continued for some years.
