Tofangchi

Tofangchi were musketeers in the armies of Safavid and later Iranian states. Under Shah Abbas I they were organised as a corps paid directly from the royal treasury and loyal to the Shah rather than to tribal chiefs. The Zand Empire also recruited Persian tofangchi to supplement its tribal cavalry and infantry, as described in its profile.
