Toffa I
Toffa I was king of Porto-Novo, on the coast of present-day Benin, from 1874 until his death in 1908. Threatened by Dahomey and by British Lagos, he renewed the French protectorate over his kingdom in 1882 and supported the French in their war against Dahomey in 1890–94. Under French rule Porto-Novo became the capital of the colony of Dahomey, and Toffa's royal powers were gradually reduced.
