Tokhta

d. 1312 · 14th century · Also known as Toqta

Tokhta was khan of the Golden Horde from 1291 to 1312, a son of Mengu-Timur. He came to power with the support of the general Nogai, who had dominated the western steppe, but turned against him and defeated and killed him around 1299-1300, restoring the unity of the khanate. His reign also saw renewed pressure on the Russian principalities and conflict with the Genoese at Caffa.
