Tokharistan
Tokharistan was the medieval name for former Bactria, the lands on both sides of the upper Amu Darya in northern Afghanistan and southern Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It was ruled by the Hephthalites and then, from the 7th century, by Turkic yabghus under Western Turkic overlordship, before falling to the Arabs in the 8th century. Its cities included Balkh, Termez and Kunduz.
