Battle of the Vorskla River

1399 · 14th century · Also known as Battle of the Vorskla

The Battle of the Vorskla River was fought on 12 August 1399 on the Vorskla, a tributary of the Dnieper in modern Ukraine. The Golden Horde army of the emir Edigu and Khan Temür Qutlugh crushed Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania, his Polish and Teutonic allies and the exiled khan Tokhtamysh. Many Lithuanian princes were killed, and the defeat checked Lithuanian expansion into the steppe.
