Battle of the Trent
The Battle of the Trent was fought in 679 near the River Trent between Æthelred of Mercia and Ecgfrith of Northumbria. Ælfwine, Ecgfrith's young brother, was killed, and Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury negotiated a peace in which Æthelred paid compensation for his death. The battle ended Northumbrian rule south of the Humber, leaving Lindsey permanently Mercian.
