Battle of the Winwaed
The Battle of the Winwaed was fought on 15 November 655, probably near Leeds, when Oswiu of Northumbria defeated and killed the pagan king Penda of Mercia. Many of Penda's allied kings also died. The victory made Oswiu overlord of Mercia and much of England for a time and hastened the conversion of Mercia to Christianity.
