Tonle Sap

The Tonle Sap is a large freshwater lake in Cambodia connected to the Mekong River, which swells greatly during the monsoon season. Its seasonal flooding and rich fisheries supported dense populations and intensive rice agriculture. Accounts of the Khmer Empire treat the Tonle Sap region as part of the environmental foundation of Khmer power around Angkor.
