Tophet
A tophet was an open-air sanctuary found at Carthage and other Phoenician and Punic sites, containing urns with the cremated remains of infants and young animals. These sanctuaries have generated sustained scholarly debate. Scholars disagree over whether they provide evidence of child sacrifice or represent cemeteries for infants who died of natural causes.
