Topchi
Topchi were artillerymen in the armies of the Safavid Empire and other states of the Islamic world. Under Shah Abbas I, a corps of topchi was created alongside ghulam cavalry and tofangchi musketeers. These new corps were paid directly from the royal treasury and were loyal to the Shah rather than to tribal chiefs.
