Battle of Chaldiran

1514 · 16th century · Also known as Chaldiran · Part of the Ottoman–Persian Wars

The Battle of Chaldiran was fought in 1514 in north-western Iran between the Ottoman sultan Selim I and the Safavid shah Ismail I. The Ottomans, using artillery and firearms, won a decisive victory over the Safavid cavalry. The defeat halted Safavid expansion into Anatolia and fixed a long-term frontier between the two empires.
