Tabriz
Tabriz is a city in north-western Iran, historically one of the principal commercial and political centres of the region. Under the Ilkhanate it became a major hub of trade where Mongol, Persian, Armenian and European merchants met. In 1501 Ismail I captured Tabriz and proclaimed himself Shah, making it the first capital of the Safavid Empire, though it was later repeatedly contested with the Ottomans.
