Treaty of Basel (1499)

1499 · 15th century · Also known as Peace of Basel (1499) · Part of the Swabian War

The Treaty of Basel of 22 September 1499 ended the Swabian War between the Old Swiss Confederacy and Emperor Maximilian I with the Swabian League. It freed the Confederates in practice from the jurisdiction of the imperial courts and the imperial taxes of the reform of 1495, making them effectively independent of the Holy Roman Empire, although formal recognition came only in 1648.
