Treaty of Bardo

1881 · 19th century · Also known as Treaty of Kassar Said

The Treaty of Bardo was signed on 12 May 1881 at the Ksar Saïd palace near Tunis by Muhammad as-Sadiq Bey, under pressure from an invading French army. It placed the Beylik of Tunis under French protection, giving France control of its foreign affairs and defence while the bey kept his throne. The La Marsa Convention of 1883 extended French control to internal administration, and the protectorate lasted until 1956.
