Destour

1920 · 20th century · Also known as Liberal Constitutional Party

The Destour ('Constitution'), formally the Liberal Constitutional Party, was a Tunisian nationalist party founded in 1920 by Abdelaziz Thâalbi and others. It demanded a constitution and an elected assembly under the French protectorate, but its cautious leadership drew mainly on the urban elite. In 1934 younger members led by Habib Bourguiba broke away to form the more popular Neo-Destour.
