Neo-Destour

1934–1964 · 20th century

The Neo-Destour was a Tunisian nationalist party founded at Ksar Hellal in March 1934 by Habib Bourguiba and other young members who broke with the Destour. Building a mass organisation with trade-union support, it led the struggle that won independence from France in 1956 and became the ruling party of the republic. It was renamed the Socialist Destourian Party in 1964.
