Muhammad III as-Sadiq
Muhammad III as-Sadiq was bey of Tunis of the Husainid dynasty from 1859 to 1882. In 1861 he promulgated a constitution, the first in the Arab world, but it was suspended in 1864 after a revolt against higher taxes. Heavy debts led to an international financial commission in 1869, and after a French invasion in 1881 he signed the Treaty of Bardo, accepting a French protectorate.
